A Residual Current Device (RCD) or safety switch, protects people in your workplace from the most common cause of electrocution - a shock from electricity passing thorough the body to earth. It also provides some protection against electrical fires.
Common examples of electrical equipment requiring an RCD include:
- Electrical equipment that is hand-held, for example drills, saws, curling wands and electric knives.
- Electrical equipment that is moved while in operation, such as jackhammers, floor polishers and extension cords.
- Electrical equipment that is moved between jobs for example, electric welders, cement mixers and portable bench saws.
Testing of Residual Current Devices
If you are a person who manages a workplace, you have the duty of care to make sure that RCDs used at work are tested in accordance to AS/NZS 3760.
